Pop Art

Emerging in the 1950s pop art represents a rupture with the traditional Fine Arts. Short for “popular art” this genre chose a bright colour palette, hard edges, fast-dry paint, and industrial print reproduction to make fast art accessible to the general public. Pop Art emphasizes the power of images and the consumerist society. Its pioneers Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein portrayed mundane mass-consumer products, brands, and famous figures including Campbell’s soup, Coca-Cola or Marilyn Monroe. Pop art has influenced not only the art world but also fashion and music. In this section, Aworanka displays a curated selection of the best Pop Art pieces from African painters.
