Ahead of the Olympics, Japanese Hotel Turns Rooms into Art Galleries

Starting from Friday, July 23rd, the city of Tokyo in Japan will be the center of the world as countries from all around the world converge for the much-delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics. A hotel, the Muji Hotel in Ginza is enhancing its rooms just in time so guests will be regaled with an array of Japanese art as they enjoy the best of international gamesmanship at the ultimate global sporting spectacle.

Muji Hotel is the signature outfit of Tokyo’s flagship lifestyle chain Muji, and as part of the global stores’ ongoing Life in Art Exhibition - an exhibition in collaboration with this summer’s Tokyo Biennale 2020/2021 art festival - three rooms in the Muji Hotel have been decorated with artworks and items by late Japanese designer Hiroshi Awatsuji, who is known for his vivid textile designs which were a symbolic feature in Japanese fashion and homewares from the 1950s to the 1990s.

From July 10 to September 5, this trio of rooms will be styled in three themes consistent with Awatsuji’s designs. The themes are based on Awatsuji’s Heart Art series, and they include the August collection, Ringo (apple) collection, and Jitensha (bicycle) collection.

The August Room is a double room that features a collection of magenta, orange, blue and green flower-like motif paintings adorning the walls, complemented by the simple red polka-dot piece, Mado.

The Ringo room is a double-bed room adorned in cooler tones of gray, blue, and black using Awatsuji’s Pool and Mado patterns. The apple motifs feature heavily on the bedsheets and wall art designs.

The Jitensha room features two twin beds and its walls are decorated with bold, bright colorful paintings and prints with a big drawing of a bicycle on the bedsheets. The color scheme follows a red, yellow, and green pattern, to imbue guests with the happy and lively vibes of summer.

Aside from the wall paintings, pillows, linen, and sheets decorated in the bold, colorful design paintings by Awatsuji, a guest will also be fascinated with more designs hidden inside the cabinets and drawers as the cutlery, ceramic plates, and mugs all sport Awatsuji’s designs. The slippers, laundry bags, and even drink coasters also sport Awatsuji’s designs, and they can be taken by guests as souvenirs.
