Children's Art: Six-year-old's Painting Becomes Viral Sensation After Teacher Called it "Wrong"

When a children's art teacher at an after-school art club supposedly told a six-year-old that her art was “wrong”, little did they know that this negative verdict would snowball into an internet viral sensation with established artists, art practitioners, and enthusiasts from around the world loving the creativity of the young aspiring artist and earning her an Etsy shop to sell her artwork.

Yesterday (Wednesday, April 21), a distraught mother shared her 6-year-old daughter’s drawing on Twitter, which she had painted at her after-school art club. According to Gemma Leighton, her daughter Edie had drawn the colorful depiction of abstract trees set against a colorful sky and pathway for her extracurricular class but all the joy and enthusiasm with which she made the art were deflated as her art teacher remarked that she did it "wrong".

To raise Edie’s spirits, her mum shared the artwork on Twitter with the caption:

"My 6-year-old daughter painted this amazing scene at an after-school art club. Her art teacher told her she had done it wrong?! You can't do art wrong! She was so upset as art is her favourite thing to do. Can you please show Edie some support and like her painting?"

Her tweet immediately went viral and trended on Twitter as people complimenting Edie's work, with some even requesting prints and using the photo as their phone background.

One fan attached a painting and wrote, “Gemma, show Edie this picture by the French artist, Raoul Dufy, and please tell her that her painting reminded me of his pictures. I would get Edie's picture made into a card or canvas print, or both, on Snapfish, and hang it in the house.”

“Tell Edie I’ve put it up on my wall at work in Australia for everyone to admire,” another fan commented, attaching the photo of Edie’s printed artwork hanging from the wall.

Within twenty-four hours, Edie’s painting of trees, sky, and a walkway had garnered over 100,000 likes, 6,000 retweets, and 8,000 comments.

Many people sent little Edie words of encouragement, with one fan commenting, "Edie, that is a beautiful picture There's no such thing as wrong in art. Keep painting and drawing and get your mum to put the best ones on the wall like an exhibition."

A second person said, “Edie your art is beautiful and engaging and provocative and makes me want to take a walk right inside of it. It’s a lot of things but it’s definitely not wrong.”

A third fan was ready to have a word with the erring teacher, writing, “Honestly a six year old…Get me that teacher on the phone!! THIS IS MOST WONDERFUL.”

“Edie, I will never forget coloring a horse blue when I was about your age and being told it was wrong. I believed it. I shouldn’t have. Why can’t you draw a blue horse? Don’t let anyone tell you how to do art. Math is right or wrong. Art never is,” a fourth person declared.

Another keen-eyed artist said, "I'm a professional artist and I love Edie's painting. Very expressive! If her teacher knew anything about art he or she would have noticed that Edie included perspective in the painting, something most 6 year olds haven't learned yet."

A Twitter-verified poet encouraged the young artist, saying, “When I was in middle school my English teacher told me to stop writing rhyming poems because they were too juvenile. I never stopped though and making rhyming poems has been my career for over 20 years! Your painting is perfect! Keep it up! Don’t worry what anyone else thinks.”

The outpouring of support was so huge that her name “Edie” became a trending topic on Twitter on Thursday, making one fan remark that Edie's work has probably been seen more times than the teacher's art.

Even Paul Stanley, the lead of the rock band Kiss added his support for Edie’s art. He tweeted: "Edie... Your art is AWESOME!!! There is no such thing as doing art 'wrong.' There are only teachers who are wrong'!!! Your art shows amazing freedom and spirit. How can that be 'wrong'?!?! Keep doing EXACTLY what you are doing. I LOVE it!!!"

As the tweet continued to receive international attention, Gemma sent an update tweet. "Honestly, I am absolutely blown away from all the amazing positive comments about Edie's painting," she responded. "I wasn't expecting such a response! Thank you to all of you who have liked and left comments. You have made one little 6-year-old very happy indeed."

"Edie would like to thank everyone for the kind and encouraging support," Gemma added. "She feels much more confident than she did this morning and will continue with her art."

The outpouring caused Gemma to create a separate Twitter account to showcase Edie's prized paintings and other children's art.

Also, in a video message where the sensational artist can be seen clutching her prized painting, the six-year-old thanked everyone for all the kind comments and announced that she will be putting up a shop on Etsy called ‘Edie’s Art’ for all the people interested in buying her artwork, adding, “and if you don’t have it (Etsy)… just download it.”
