David Herbert Dale, the renowned Nigerian artist, was born in 1947 in Nigeria to an English father and a Nigerian mother. Dale left for the UK at the age of two to live with his aunt, where he attended Groombridge, England before proceeding to Guildford Grammar School, Surrey, England, where he spent three years. He later returned to Lagos, Nigeria after nearly two decades, and completed his secondary education at  St. Gregory’s College, Lagos where he met Bruce Onobrakpeya, then the art teacher at the college who encouraged his interest in art.

Awards and honors

David Dale has won numerous awards and honors worldwide. They include:

1. First Class Star Award for his contribution to contemporary arts in Africa, Human Education Institute for Africa, 1994.

2. Bronze Medal by Diamond Publishing, presented by former Vice President of Nigeria, Rtd Augustus Aikhomu, Festival of Arts in Lagos, Nigeria, 1994.

3. Gold and silver medals and silver cup, 1965 Festival of Arts, 1965.

4. 2nd Prize for his Lino Print, Iganmu Masquerade 1965.

5. Gold Medal, HEIA, 1965.

6. Silver cup, HEIA, 1964.

7. Second place medal, International Arts Competition, 1963 -1965.

8. Silver medal, Human Education Institute of Africa(HEIA) in 1963.

9. 2nd Prize, Gold Life Painting contest, organized by Kingsway Stores 1959.
