Sculpture and sketching

Born in 1931 in Agbor, Delta State, the late Nigerian sculptor Ben Osawe is one of Nigeria´s most outstanding sculptors. Like several of his Nigerian contemporaries, Osawe brought traditional Nigerian influences together with the formal language of European classical modernism; his motifs came from his African surroundings, while his style is more European. His first instructor was his father, who was a sculptor for Oba Eweka II of Benin. From 1956-59 he studied at the School of Graphic Art at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, England. Thereafter, he returned to Nigeria, where he taught at the University of Nsukka. Right after his training at Camberwell, Osawe committed to using drawing to conceive of forms that would eventually be rendered as sculpture, the medium for which he is arguably best known.

Exhibitions

Osawe's works have been shown in many exhibitions in Europe, Africa and the USA such as The Short Century, curated by Okwui Enwezor. In 1962 he took part in an exhibition of the Artists´ International Association in London, and a year later some of his works were shown in the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh. Since then he has taken part in exhibitions all around the world, from Lagos to New York and New Delhi. His Sculptures are to be seen in many public exhibitions and museums, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Lagos and the cultural department of the Nigerian Ministry of Information. He continued to practice visual art until his death in 2007.
