Painting and sketching

Born in 1997, Chigozie Obi is a Nigerian multi-dimensional visual artist from Anambra. She only started taking painting seriously during her IT when she began mastering color usage and proportions in her oil paintings. Chigozie obtained a bachelors degree of Visual Arts from the Creative Arts department, University of Lagos in 2017. In her work, she experiments with the use of layering of multiple materials.

Seeing herself in every character she paints, Chigozie asserts her playfulness with color in her high-key watercolor paintings and intimate monochromatic tones of red and brown in chiaroscuro to create moods and backdrops of light and darkness, and effect facial expressions from solitude to tranquility. She etches stories about social norms and regressive beliefs like body and beauty standards, inequality, and tradition, and how they cause women’s struggles of insecurity, depression, and the strive for self-acceptance. She lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria.
