Afrofuturism: African Digital Artists Reimagine the Future Through NFTs

As technology continues to change the art world, African digital artists specializing in Afrofuturism have begun to gain traction in the digital art world as well as in the nft creative community.

Traditional afro-futurists are also now exploring the numerous possibilities in digital arts, leveraging different digital technologies to commercialize their artworks online.  Some sell their works to art collectors on the non-fungible token (NFTs) market. It's indeed safe to say digital art has become the new trend.

Nigerian Art curator Somi Nwandu is part of the new trend. The 28-year-old artist who found her self-expression through art curated a traveling exhibition series that explores reimagined African features through arts titled “Afrofuturism: First. Female. Forward” making it the first-of-its-kind exhibition in Lagos, Nigeria.

Nwandu said: “Afrofuturism is about celebrating and exploring reimagined African features through art."

Afrofuturism doesn't only celebrate African features but also allows Africans to reclaim their identity through arts and stories about their culture and struggles without being influenced by eurocentrism.

Nwandu made it known that one of the reasons she made it an all-female digital artist international exhibition showcasing the works of black female artists is to see digital artists of African descent, especially the female community on the world map.

Though Nwandu believes there is still a lack of representation in African dynamics, she, however, curated the artworks with the aim to ”put the digital ideas to life” and allow people to see them in the physical space as well as connect with the cultural and personal interpretations.

This doesn't only amplify the works of art but also highlight the versatility and the dynamic effect of digital art.

Likewise in Aworanka, we have Tobi Ibiwoye who also reimagines the dynamism of the African future through digital art.

Ibiwoye is a self-taught digital artist who started his professional journey as a photorealism artist and later ventured into miniature arts and scribbles. One of his works titled “Truth” centers on the concept of Afrofuturism. It depicts the image of a black girl with a rope tied around the neck of her alien pet known as “Truth." Though Ibiwoye is more of a scribbling artist, many of his artworks still connect the present with the future.

While the future of digital artworks in Nigeria looks very promising, the country’s prohibition of banks, and financial institutions from enabling cryptocurrency payments, remains one of the biggest challenges facing digital artists.

However, one thing every digital artist can agree on is that the time has come for the concept of Afrofuturism to be explored in the digital art space in reimagining a better tomorrow.
