Alex Nwokolo is a celebrated Nigerian postwar and contemporary painter who identifies primarily as a mixed media artist. He was born in Lagos in 1963 and developed an interest in art at an early age. As a teenager, Alex spent most of his time painting at the National Museum art club at Onikan, Lagos. From Lagos, Alex moved to the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi where he enrolled and completed a Higher National Diploma from 1986 to 1991. With the art school relatively new, he was able to thrive in such an environment as it was run by young artists and academics. As a student, Alex received the Rector’s Certificate of Excellence and the American Ambassador’s Award in 1991.

Special awards

In 2004, Alex Nwokolo was awarded the Guinness Certificate of Merit in 2004. With a number of international features to his name, including an exhibition at the Aria Art Gallery, London, Nwokolo's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from $447 USD to $13,750 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2008 the record price for this artist at auction is $13,750 USD for Fragmented Hope, sold at Phillips New York, Chelsea in 2010.
